Work schedule

The reconstruction of the M3 metro line infrastructure was carried out in three phases. The line is divided into the following sections:

Northern section, between Újpest-központ and Lehel tér stations,

Central section, between Lehel tér and Nagyvárad tér stations,

Southern section, between Nagyvárad tér and Kőbánya-Kispest stations.

After the completion of the three sections, the Lehel tér and Nagyvárad Square stations were reconstructed.

The works started on 6 November 2017 on the northern section of the line, between Újpest-központ – Lehel tér stations. The renewed stations (Újpest-központ, Újpest-városkapu, Gyöngyösi utca, Forgách utca, Göncz Árpád városközpont, Dózsa György út) were reopened to passengers on 30 March 2019.

The renovation of the southern section of the line – between Népliget - Kőbánya-Kispest stations – started on 6 April 2019. The Népliget, Ecseri út, Pöttyös utca, Határ út, Kőbánya-Kispest stations reopened to passengers on 22 October 2020.

The reconstruction of the middle section – between Lehel tér and Nagyvárad tér stations – started before the opening of the southern section.

Timetable for the reconstruction of the middle section was as follows:

On 7 March 2020, the closure of the Arany János utca and Ferenciek tere metro stations was completed.

On 11 July 2020, the modernisation works also started at the Corvin-negyed and Semmelweis Klinikák metro stations.

On 7 November 2020, the section between Nyugati pályaudvar – Semmelweis Klinikák stations was closed.

On 14 May 2022, the three stations of the middle section – Kálvin tér, Corvin-negyed, Semmelweis Klinikák – opened to passengers, and the renovation of Lehel tér and Nagyvárad tér metro stations and the retrofitting of Dózsa György út metro station started.

On 23 January 2023, the Ferenciek tere and Deák Ferenc tér stations were opened to passengers, so that the metro was now transporting passengers between Deák Ferenc tér and Kőbánya-Kispest. The replacement bus service between Deák Ferenc tér and Göncz Árpád városközpont continued.

On 20 March 2023, the metro stations at Arany János utca and Nyugati pályaudvar and Dózsa György út were opened to passengers, with barrier-free access. This enabled the metro to run along the entire line, with non-stop transit at Nagyvárad tér and Lehel tér stations. Replacement metro services were canceled on weekdays, and the stations at Nagyvárad tér and Lehel tér were accessible by station replacement services.

On 22 May 2023, the Nagyvárad tér and Lehel tér stations (where modernisation only started in May 2022) were opened to passengers, completing the 5.5-year reconstruction of the M3 metro line.

We kept the public informed about the reconstruction and the progress of the works, and updates about traffic changes, traffic organisation and metro replacement could be found on the related page of BKK.
